Are you looking for the best cheap places to stay on Maui? Check out the awesome Maui vacation rentals that won’t break the bank!

One thing to keep in mind is that many properties have minimum rental durations, especially during holiday periods. Some are as little as 3 nights but I’ve seen winter break Maui condos for rent that require 14 days.

Keeping that in mind, at the end of this article I’ll also share a few budget-friendly Maui hotel options that you can consider if you’re planning a shorter trip – in some cases they may be much cheaper than paying for cleaning fees on a condo, or you can book them for free with credit card points.

Budget-friendly Maui hotels

If you prefer hotels or none of those options appeal to you, there are also a few hotel bargains on Maui that you can seek out.

Hyatt Regency Maui & Hyatt Vacation Club at Ka’anapali Beach

The Hyatt Regency Maui is not inexpensive. But you can stay there for free if you play your cards right… literally. The Chase Sapphire Preferred and Reserve are arguably the best travel rewards credit cards available, especially for families. The points you earn can be transferred to valuable partners like Hyatt where you can redeem them for major value.

How valuable? Whether you want to stay at the full-service Hyatt Regency Maui or the quieter Hyatt Vacation Club condos next door, off-peak redemptions start at just 25,000 points per night. The welcome bonus and initial spending on a Sapphire card will net you up to three nights right off the bat, and you don’t even have to pay resort fees on your room. If there’s another adult in your household they can get their own Sapphire card and you can pool the points together easily.

My husband and I each have the Sapphire Preferred, and we pair it with the no-fee Chase Freedom Unlimited. We actually use the Freedom for most of our daily spending because it earns points faster than the Sapphires on things like gas and groceries, but someone in your household needs a Sapphire in order to transfer points to Hyatt. I talk more about these strategies in my overview of the best travel rewards credit cards.

Outrigger Honua Kai

Outrigger Honua Kai is one of the premier “condotel resort” complexes on Maui. It truly offers the best of both worlds, from full kitchens where you’ll save money on meals to incredible views and resort pools with a water slide. If you’re going off-peak and don’t need one of the biggest, fanciest units there can be awesome value here – under $300 per night.

If you haven’t already, be sure to join Expedia’s OneKey rewards program. It’s easy to hit silver status when booking tours and other activities (even close to home), and for many dates Honua Kai will reward you with a hefty discount. You’ll see it right in the booking screen. Be sure to check the coupons section of your account to see if you have an additional discount waiting for you. You’ll also accumulate a little bit of “OneKey Cash” to use for a future hotel stay or tour.

Maui Coast Hotel

For a budget-friendly Maui hotel in Kihei, check out Maui Coast Hotel. It’s basically across the street from the wonderful Kam I beach park and offers the intimacy of a mid-size hotel combined with nice amenities like a pool, a large gym, free parking and on-site coffee shop.

This summer the hotel will open its brand-new Kai tower, while still keeping its original Hoku tower open. That means more choices for guests, as Hoku rooms will be less expensive than Kai rooms. There are even suites available in both towers to accommodate families who want a little more room to spread out.
