Flights & Time Zones: It Depends Where You Live
This is the part most comparison articles skip. Hawaii is a 5–6 hour flight from the West Coast and 10–11 hours from the East. The time zone is brutal for East Coasters: Hawaii Standard Time is 5–6 hours behind Eastern, meaning your kids will be up at 4 AM ready to go and crashing by 7 PM. The adjustment takes days.
Costa Rica (Central Time, no daylight saving) is far more accessible for Midwesterners and Southerners. Non-stop flights from cities like Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, and even Columbus exist, and the time zone is either the same as or one hour behind your home. For families who can’t absorb a multi-day time zone adjustment, this is a significant practical advantage.
Cost: Hawaii on Cash, Costa Rica on Cash
Both are not cheap. Hawaii hotels are extremely expensive, especially during peak periods. Food and activities run high. But Hawaii wins on one dimension that’s critical for points travelers: hotel award availability. The Marriott, Hyatt, and IHG footprint in Hawaii is excellent, and redemption values tend to be strong. Hawaii is genuinely one of the best places on Earth to leverage hotel points.
Costa Rica wins on cash rates — particularly for vacation rentals and boutique lodges, which are often a better fit for family travel than hotels anyway. But the award hotel network is thinner, and flight options on points are more limited depending on your points program.

Activities: Where Each Destination Wins
Hawaii wins on beach quality, snorkeling, and sheer natural variety across islands. The Big Island alone has active volcanoes, black sand beaches, snow-capped peaks, and lush rainforest. The diversity of experiences within a single trip is hard to beat.
Costa Rica wins on wildlife and adventure. The density of wildlife viewing — sloths, monkeys, toucans, crocodiles — from the very first day is something Hawaii genuinely cannot match. Zip-lining, white water rafting, night hikes, and surf lessons are all accessible and family-friendly. For families with active, adventurous kids, Costa Rica often delivers more ‘wow’ moments per day.
Itinerary Planning: A Very Different Challenge
Hawaii itinerary planning is intuitive — pick an island (or two), book a hotel, rent a car, go. The tourism infrastructure is mature and reliable.
Costa Rica requires more strategic thinking. The country is small but the driving times are deceptive due to road conditions. Moving between regions — Arenal, Manuel Antonio, the Osa Peninsula — can eat up full travel days. Choosing the right bases and limiting moves is essential for a good family experience. Many first-timers end up either trying to do too much or spending the trip in the car.
Seasonality
Hawaii has year-round generally good weather, with some variation by island and side of the island. The North Shore of Oahu gets big winter swells; Maui’s West Side is reliably sunny most of the year.
Costa Rica has two distinct seasons: dry (December–April) and green/rainy (May–November). For families, the dry season is generally the right choice. During the green season, some roads become impassable and activities get cancelled. However, the green season is cheaper and the country is lush and beautiful, so some families find it worthwhile with adjusted expectations.
Accessibility
Hawaii is the clear winner for families with grandparents or mobility considerations. The tourism infrastructure is excellent, accommodations are uniformly accessible, and there’s no ambiguity about road conditions or medical access.
Costa Rica can be challenging for those with mobility limitations. Cobblestones, unpaved roads, and the general adventure-orientation of the country assume a certain baseline of physical capability.
The Final Decision
We chose Costa Rica for this winter. For our family right now — two active kids, Midwest-based, not traveling with grandparents this trip — the adventure activities, accessible flight logistics, and vacation rental flexibility tipped it. Hawaii will always be there, and we’ll get back.

Is Hawaii or Costa Rica better for young kids?
Hawaii is generally more turnkey for very young kids. Costa Rica is spectacular but requires more logistics planning. For kids under 5, Hawaii is usually the easier choice; for kids 6 and up, Costa Rica starts to really shine.
Is Hawaii or Costa Rica cheaper?
